HPA Scholars: Shadowing opportunities Summer 2018 will be posted in Canvas in late-April (space limited!)
Most medical and dental schools want to make sure that applicants to their programs are making informed decisions about their career choice. Observing patient care and processes in healthcare settings and shadowing healthcare providers are among the best ways to learn if a career in medicine or dentistry is for you. The HPA provides shadowing opportunities through partnerships is has with UW Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND), Harborview Medical Center – Internal Medicine, Neighborcare Health, Seattle Children’s Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic and Sea Mar Community Health Centers. These three healthcare partners serve the healthcare needs of diverse patient populations in their clinics located in Seattle and other locations in King County. HPA scholars choose the healthcare clinical setting(s) in which they would prefer to shadow and “matches” are made in consultation with the clinics. HPA scholars enter into basic, but individualized, contracts with the clinic that covers expectations and assurances (e.g., required immunizations, confidentiality).
Shadowing experiences for the 2017/2018 school year have adjusted to correlate with an undergraduate student schedule. Scholars will commit to one (1) full academic quarter in length, totaling approximately 4-5 hours a week for an estimated 8-10 week duration.
