University of Washington School of Medicine
An Enrichment Program for
Students Transitioning Into Medical School
Each summer, the Center for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (CEDI) sponsors a Prematriculation Program (PreMat) for entering medical students from educationally or financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The goal of the program is to facilitate studentsí transition to medical school by providing academic and social support. PreMat is especially helpful to students who have been away from an intensive academic program because it provides a preview of the medical school environment and curriculum. The major course of study during the program is Histology. Students receive intensive histology instruction for five weeks and take a challenge exam at the end of the five weeks. Students who pass the exam will receive credit for HuBio 510 (Histology) - this is a class which students usually take in the fall.
Program Activities & Schedule
Histology lectures are held daily in the morning; a lab with organized review and tutorial sessions is held Tuesday and Thursday in the early afternoon. Other activities include: sessions on the application of histology to radiology, stress management; service learning; test taking strategies, as well as meetings with advisers, mentors and current medical students. There are occasional evening and weekend sessions.
Cost & Housing
There are no tuition costs to participate in the Prematriculation program. PreMat participants are responsible for required texts and their room and board while in Seattle. Stipend for students depending on need.
Histology instruction is given by faculty from the UW Departments of Biological Structure and Physiology. Second-year medical and dental students serve as teaching assistants and facilitate the lab and tutorial sessions.
As mentioned above, there are no tuition costs for participating in this program. In exchange, we would like participants to informally network and provide mentorship to the pre-med/pre-dental undergraduate students who are participating in our Summer Medical Dental Education Program (SMDEP) program. These opportunities will arise throughout the program during fieldtrips and service learning activities.
2014 PreMat will run from June 23 through July 25, 2014. Sessions will be held at the University of Washington Magnusson Health Sciences Center in Seattle. Attendance is required at all sessions. Participants should expect to spend six or more hours a day in sessions. We highly discourage students from being involved in employment or other outside activities during the five weeks of the program.
Students who have been accepted to the University Of Washington School Of Medicine who come from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, or who have spent a significant time away from academic study, are encouraged to apply.
Submit a letter of application by April 30thth 2014. In your letter please: 1) state why you are interested in participating in the PreMat Program; 2) state how you would benefit from participating, 3) describe how you would mentor an undergraduate.
