- Equity
and Excellence
(2000/$50.00)
Roger Soder (moderator), Eugene Cota-Robles, Amy Gerstein, Vinetta
Jones, Robert Schwartz, Warren Simmons, Theodore Sizer, Barbara Smith,
Marilyn Watson
In June 1999, school and university educators who are participating
in the leading efforts to renew K-12 schools and teacher education assembled
at a conference titled In Praise of Education, sponsored
by the Institute for Educational Inquiry. On several panels during this
conference, some of the nation's best known educational leaders addressed
critical issues. One of those issues was ensuring equity in our renewing
schools, the focus of this video. Our purpose in sharing the following
excerpts from these panels is to encourage viewers to reflect on what
needs to be done in our schools and in teacher education to ensure that
there are equal opportunities to learn for all children. We want you
to consider questions such as: What demands does a democratic society
make of schools? and, What are the implications of equity-related matters
for practices in schools and in teacher education?
- Education
and Journalism: Ensuring a Well-Informed Public (2000/$50.00)
Pamela Katims Steele (moderator), Janet Bingham, Milton Chen, Bruce

along with accompanying position papers and discussion guide for the
purpose of stimulating conversation among educators and journalists
in local communities.
- Standards
and Educational Renewal (2000/$50.00)
James Comer, Amy Gerstein, Carl Glickman, Linda Johannesen, Vinetta
Jones, Henry Levin, George D. Nelson, Sophie Sa, Warren Simmons, Theodore
Sizer, Patricia Wasley, Marilyn Watson
At the In Praise of Education conference, several panels
featured some of the nation's best known educational leaders. Panelists
raised the issue of standards and renewal, the focus of this video.
Our intention in sharing the panel excerpts that follow is to encourage
viewers to reflect about what our schools need to do to ensure that
students perform well. In what ways do standards offer promise for a
better future? And, what needs to be done so that schools are continually
engaged in renewal rather than assuming that if they have adopted the
latest fad they have solved all their problems? And, what needs to be
done to ensure that these two ideas-high standards and renewal-reinforce
each other?
