Tox-in-a-Box
is a toolkit for scientists who want to share information about
toxicology and environmental health with students of all ages
and the general public. The materials have been successfully used
in classrooms and afterschool programs for K-12 audiences, as
well as in teacher training sessions and informational sessions
for the general public.
Tox-in-a-Box
includes
the following sections:
•
Living in a Chemical World - Demonstrates how the world around
us, including ourselves, is comprised of chemicals.
•
Dose Makes the Poison - Explains that everything has the
potential to be toxic. This section includes a demonstration that
highlights dose/response relationships and the susceptibility
of children to poisons.
•
Toxicology: An Application of Basic Sciences - Shows how
toxicology and environmental health relate to other sciences.
•
Risks and Benefits - Assessing Your Options - Explores the
basics of risk assessment.
•
Tox Tales - Explores how toxicology and environmental health
relate to everyday life, and how our understanding of how "safe"
something is evolves over time.
