Pilot Project Program Goals and Background

The Pilot Project Program provides initial support for investigators to establish novel lines of research. The program promotes exploration of possible innovative directions representing a significant departure from ongoing funded research for established investigators in environmental health sciences. Investigators from other areas of endeavor are encouraged to apply their expertise to environmental health research.

CEEH pilot projects have provided data for numerous successful grant applications. For example, in 2005 two recipients of 2004-2005 pilot project grants were awarded multi-year R01 grants totalling $3,340,000.

Each year in November, a call for CEEH pilot projects proposals is sent out to all CEEH members and to selected departments at the University of Washington, Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, and the Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. The call for proposals is also listed in University Week and the Funding Bulletin. Proposals are due the first week of February. Funding for the selected projects begins on April 1 and ends on March 31 of the following year.
