The CEEH is proud to recognize investigator Ulrike “Riki” Peters as a 2008 recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. This prestigious award honors the most promising young researchers in the United States whose early accomplishments show the greatest promise for strengthening America’s leadership in science. Recipients are selected on the basis of the innovation and relevance of their research as well as community service demonstrated through scientific leadership, education or community outreach.
Dr. Peters was nominated through the National Institutes of Health for her work in understanding how the interplay of genetics and nutrition can impact cancer risk. By analyzing blood, DNA and tissue samples from large study populations, Dr. Peters’ research focuses on integrating genetic and molecular methods to better understand the role selenium, vitamin D, calcium and other dietary components may play in preventing prostate and colorectal cancer. She is also leading a consortium of investigators in a genome wide association study to identify genetic risk factors colon cancer.
The Center is delighted to support Dr. Peters’ research and enthusiastic about the contributions she will continue to make to the fields of ecogenetics and public health. Congratulations, Riki!
