Short descriptions of CAEE's national engineering education research activities, 2003-2010

CAEE conducted research in four broad areas:

The Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education began research in January 2003 with funding through December 2007 from the National Science Foundation's Directorates for Engineering and Education and Human Resources. Supplementary funds from the Engineering Directorate allowed research to continue in 2008-2009. Data analysis, publication of results, and release of the Final Report, Enabling Engineering Student Success, continued into 2010.

CAEE began as a team of researchers from Colorado School of Mines, Howard University, Stanford University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Washington (the lead institution). From this beginning, the CAEE team expanded to include researchers from campuses across the U.S. including Purdue University, Olin College of Engineering, Virginia Tech, University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and the University of Rochester.

During the course of the grant, 63 faculty, research scientists, and staff; 41 graduate research assistants; and almost 50 undergraduates participated in the research. Through December 2010, the team had produced over 130 journal articles and conference papers based on CAEE research. As part of getting disseminating results broadly, the team presented ten keynote and plenary addresses and hosted nine conference special sessions dedicated to discussion of CAEE results. These and other presentations, conferences, and meetings listed on the Publications >> page.

Following the conclusion of the CAEE grant in 2010, members of the research team are continuing their efforts to advance the education of engineering students through ongoing dissemination of CAEE results, participation in grant-funded studies that build on the CAEE work, and involvement in additional research projects.
