A Community of Innovators

Welcome to the Center for Engineering Learning and Teaching (CELT).

Our Mission:

* To conduct internationally recognized research in engineering learning,

* To promote teaching effectiveness in engineering classrooms at the UW

* To be a model for effecting change in Colleges of Engineering

Founded in 1998, CELT is the first center in the nation in a College of Engineering to combine a research and faculty development mission. By building the engineering education research base and grounding our work with engineering faculty in the best scholarship available we are better able to address the teaching and learning requirements of a dynamic profession.

Engineering educators today face a challenge that has been the subject of discussion among industry and academic partners for decades. Graduating engineers must possess a large set of attributes to adequately meet the needs of the industries that hire them, and those needs are changing. Certainly engineering graduates must understand fundamental math, science, and engineering sciences. However, they must also be able to understand the context of engineering problems, synthesize information, design appropriate solutions, and communicate effectively, all in a team environment. Through outstanding scholarship and innovative practice we are working to meet the needs of engineering educators and to help transform engineering education.

CELT also has a lead role in the NSF's Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE) established January, 2003.
