Strategic Synthesis - Cheaper Chemicals With Less Waste
Increasing the sustainability of our society will require new industrial processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. Catalysis can allow for “greener” production of basic chemicals, plastics, fuels and pharmaceuticals by opening reaction pathways that require less energy, use less toxic reagents, and decrease waste by being more selective for the desired products. Our goal is to invent catalysts that will maximize the efficiency of industrially viable chemical reactions, and will also minimize the generation of hazardous waste.

Technical details on our current research in this area:

Anti-Markovnikov Hydroamination of Alkenes

Direct Formation of Aniline from Benzene via Homogeneous Catalysis

Dioxygen Chemistry

Directed Evolution of Metalloenzymes for Organic Synthesis

A New Generation of Electrophilic Oxidation Catalysts
