Fred Sparling, MD is an internationally recognized expert in bacterial
diseases, and has played a major role in understanding the molecular
pathogenesis of gonococcal infections, as well as the basis of antibiotic
resistance and genetic exchange among gonococci. Dr. Sparling is a
Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of
North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and the Director of both the North
Carolina Sexually Transmitted Diseases Cooperative Research Center and
the Southeast Regional Center of Excellence in Biodefense and Emerging
Infectious Diseases.
