To be eligible for a CFAR award from NIH, an institution (or consortium of institutions) must have a significant amount of research funding in HIV/AIDS. The research base includes peer-reviewed HIV/AIDS grants, cooperative agreements, and research contracts utilizing only the following mechanisms: P01, R01, R03, R18, R21, R24, R29, R33, R35, R37, U01, U10, U19, U24, U54, and K series awards, and N01 (excluding contracts that primarily fund the production of materials or services for support of research). The UW/FHCRC CFAR currently has enough HIV/AIDS research funding from NIH to qualify for the highest tier (level 3; $3M/year) of funding.
