Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research Core

Mission

The UW CFAR Health Services Research (HSR) Core provides support for research requiring longitudinal HIV/AIDS patient information and expertise in clinical epidemiology and health services research. The UW HIV Cohort is a longitudinal observational study of HIV-infected patients who receive primary care in the UW Harborview Medical Center Madison HIV Clinic and the UW Medical Center Virology Clinic. The HSR Core developed the UW HIV Information System (UWHIS) to integrate comprehensive clinical data on the UW HIV Cohort from January 1, 1995 to the present.

The HSR Core maintains the Madison/Virology Clinic Registry of HIV/AIDS patients who consent to be contacted for research and the Specimen Repository Database that tracks specimens banked in UW HIV Specimen Repository and links this information to patients' clinical data in the UWHIS. The UWHIS is used to identify patients who meet inclusion and exclusion criteria for enrollment into prospective, interventional studies conducted by the UW AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and other research projects; for retrospective and prospective observational studies; and for basic and translational research. Data from the UWHIS are provided for investigators to assess study feasibility, prepare grant proposals, and conduct a broad range of HIV clinical research.
