Increasing Genetic Awareness

The Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society  (SACGHS) addressed the integration of genetic and genomic technologies into health care and public health; the clinical, public health, ethical, economic, legal, and societal implications of these technologies; gaps in research and data collection; the impact of patent policy and licensing practices on their accessibility and availability; and how genetic and genomic technologies are used in other settings such as education, employment, insurance and law.

This section includes three parts: a link to the SACGHS report, a video discussion of the report, and a case study on public health genetics.

Report: The 2011 SACGHS Report on Genomics Education (PDF)

Video: Gita Krishnaswamy discusses the final report from the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health, and Society (SACGHS). The report underscores the need for improved genomics education and training for the public health workforce.

Case Study: This case study centers around a young researcher developing a study to investigate the biological, environmental, and social determinants of health in colorectal cancer and screening rates. It can be used in a classroom setting or as a self-study document.
