Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

CPE is an accredited form of pastoral education for seminarians, clergy, and laity which utilizes an action/reflection model of learning under supervision. Students develop both professional pastoral identity and pastoral expertise.

An accredited unit includes a minimum of 300 hours of clinical practice and 100 hours of group learning and supervision. The fee for one unit of CPE is $650.00. This fee is reduced to $500.00 for consecutive units. Upon acceptance into the program a $200 nonrefundable deposit will be required toward the unit fee to hold your position.

The core methodology of the program involves individualized learning contracts, clinical practice, didactic resources, individual and group supervision, and reflection which integrates theory, practice, and personal history.

Clinical Pastoral Education includes:

  • Pastoral Reflection: reflecting on one's self as a person and spiritual care giver in relationship to others in crisis, the supervisor and peer group members, as well as the curriculum and institutional setting.
  • Pastoral Formation: focusing on personal and pastoral identity issues in learning and ministry.
  • Pastoral Competence: deepening and unfolding of competence in spiritual care function and skills and  knowledge of faith traditions and the behavioral sciences.
