CPE FAQs

What does a successful CPE application look like?
1. Length: Questions 1 (a reasonably full account of your life) and 2 (a description of your spiritual growth and development) should be answered separately.  Each of these answers should be 2-3 pages long.  If you are applying for residency, be sure to update the answers from your intern application.

2. Please read the application questions carefully. We are not looking for any right of wrong answers; we simply want to get to know you better. The chronological details of your life are less compelling to us than examples and stories of accomplishments, challenges and especially the transitions in your life.

3. Here are some suggestions for application questions we have found more challenging for applicants.

Question 1: A reasonably full account of your life. Include, for example, significant and important persons and events, especially as they have impacted, or continue to impact, your personal growth and development. Describe your family of origin, current family relationships, and important and supportive social relationships.

Share stories, moments, examples of events, challenges and accomplishments, life losses and transitions, family and persons that influence and shape who you are today. We value hearing about what is meaningful about them to you.

Question 2: A description of your spiritual growth and development. Include, for example, the faith heritage into which you were born and describe and explain any subsequent personal conversions, your call to ministry, religious experiences, and significant persons and events that have impacted, or continue to impact, your spiritual growth and development.

Describe for us moments or examples of your encounters with the sacred and holy. We would be especially interested in hearing about any transition experiences and how you moved through them.

Question 6: Your impressions of Clinical Pastoral Education. Indicate, for example, what you believe or imagine CPE to be. Indicate if CPE is being required of you. Indicate any learning goals or issues of which you are aware and would like to address in CPE. Finally, indicate how CPE may be able to help you meet needs generated by your ministry or call to ministry.

We would like to know why you are interested in this CPE Center and what would be most challenging for you in this learning environment.

What is the difference between ACPE and CPE?
ACPE
referrs to Harborview's accrediting body, the Association for Clinical Pastoral Care. CPE means Clinical Pastoral Education and is the title of the eduational program.

What is the CPE relationship between Harborview (HMC) and University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC)?
Our CPE program is based at Harborview with educational placement at UWMC. Students in our program serve at both medical centers. HMC and UWMC are part of the UW Medicine system.

When do I find out my primary hospital and unit assignments?
We do our best to accommodate students’ requests, but the final assignment is made upon arrival, considering the needs of the medical institutions and the CPE group.

What is your yearly CPE schedule of units offered?

Fall CPE internship: Late August through late January
Spring CPE internship: Mid-January through early June

How many hours per week are required for a CPE Unit? How is that time broken down?

Summer CPE (Early June through mid-August) is an 11 week full-time (40+ hrs/week) commitment to education in Spiritual Care at our CPE center. Over the course of the unit, a student will have the opportunity to serve 300+ hours of clinical ministry and receive 100+ hours of educational time. • National Association of Jewish Chaplains: www.najc.org/main

Each has CPE, ordination, endorsement from a faith community and education requirements.

How can I visit one of the medical centers or meet with a supervisor?
You are welcome to arrange a visit through Cindy Thelen, the Operations Manager for the department. Cindy can usually arrange a visit with a current student, as well as a short tour of Harborview or UWMC. Supervisors do not meet with prospective students. Contact Cindy at chaplain@u.washington.edu or (206) 744-2757.

How do I apply?
Applications are available online at http://depts.washington.edu/chaplain/cpeapplication.html

Do you offer housing, tuition waivers or stipends for CPE interns?
We do not offer housing or stipends for CPE interns. Many interns from out of town have success finding housing through their faith-tradition connections. We are sometimes able to offer reduced tuition based on student need.  Please make inquires for reduced tuition during your interview or first week of the unit.

Is medical insurance provided for CPE interns?
No. Interns must rely on their own medical insurance.

What immunizations are required for CPE interns?
Students received detailed requirements after they are accepted into the program and before their unit begins. The influenza vaccine is mandatory for all Fall and Spring Interns. In addition, students must provide documentation of immunity to the following vaccine preventable diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, and pertussis and to be screened at a minimum annually for tuberculosis.

Is a stipend provided to CPE residents?
Yes. Residents receive a stipend and benefits, including health insurance.

May I volunteer as a spiritual care provider at HMC or UWMC without taking CPE?
This is not possible. All of our spiritual care providers are engaged in the educational process of CPE.
