The Eunice Kennedy Shriver Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC) - Michael J. Guralnick, Ph.D., Director

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC) studies the underlying causes of mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, and develops behavioral and biomedical techniques to prevent disabilities or minimize their impact. University of Washington faculty members from a wide variety of scientific disciplines are appointed as CHDD Research Affiliates. Supported by Scientific Core Facilities, they work in interdisciplinary collaborations referred to as Research Emphasis Areas (see below) to address developmental disabilities from a broad range of perspectives, including genetic factors, neurobiological processes, and behavior.

Research Emphasis Areas (REAs)

Each of the 11 REAs has a coordinator who encourages research in his or her REA, strengthens its interdisciplinary components, identifies unique needs associated with each area, adds new members, and makes connections to clinical activities where appropriate. Special REA seminars are organized to further stimulate collaboration and new developments.
