PEER-RELATED SOCIAL
COMPETENCE

Dr. Guralnick's
work focuses on the peer relations and friendship development
of mildly developmentally delayed children
of preschool age. Studies include the course of development
of peer interaction and friendships, psychological processes
that
are involved, factors influencing developmental trajectories,
such as parent-child interaction or child characteristics,
peer social networks, and the role of intervention to promote
children’s
peer-related social competence. A clinical tool, the Assessment
of Peer Relations (APR), useful for both clinical and
research purposes, reflects
the developmental model that has been established in this research
program. He is currently studying the peer interactions of
young children with Down syndrome.
