Dr. Alvord's research focuses on increasing understanding of the pathology of specific neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and recurring brain tumors. In the brain tumor research, he collaborates on the development of mathematical models of the growth and diffusion of primary brain tumors (gliomas), which notoriously recur despite surgical resection. Alvord and colleagues are collecting cases to try to establish real-life three-dimensional quantitative measures to correlate with the mathematical models. Analysis of currently available MR images allows calculation of the values of the net rates of proliferation and dispersal that govern the rate of growth of infiltrating gliomas. These calculations facilitate prediction of the duration of survival following any extent of resection and monitoring (but not predicting) the effects of other treatments (x-irradiation, chemotherapy).
