Dr. Bird's research focuses on identifying genes associated with familial neurodegenerative disorders and other hereditary neurologic disorders. He collaborates with other investigators in linkage analysis studies of families with neurogenetic disorders. Research areas include Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy, Alzheimer’s disease, familial frontotemporal dementia, hereditary spastic paraplegia, muscular dystrophies, Huntington’s disease, and hereditary ataxias. In ongoing research, Bird and colleagues establish phenotype/genotype correlations, isolate chromosomal locations related to the particular disorder, and search for and identify the pertinent genes. Recent findings have included new genetic insights into hereditary neuropathies and ataxia.
