Dr. Born

Dr. Born focuses his research on links between neuronal and glial proliferation and survival.  He investigates roles of intrinsic and extrinsic regulators and collaborates on anatomical studies of brain tissue from humans and animals to advance understanding of epilepsy, brain injury, and neoplasia.

Born and colleagues recently documented morphological changes in a rodent animal model of post-traumatic epilepsy that suggest cortical and hippocampal contributions to epileptogenesis. Other research involves investigating an animal (sheep) model of fetal ethanol exposure. Born also studies development (aberrant neuronal-glial differentiation in Taylor-type focal cortical dysplasia, type IIA/B) and cycle variation with differentiation in neoplasia (NeuN expression correlates with reduced mitotic index of neoplastic cells in central neurocytomas). In addition, pilot experiments are underway to study progenitor cell differentiation contributing to glial cell neoplasia.
