Research |
Dr. Crockett's research focuses on factors promoting the psychological well-being of laboratory monkeys. She works to understand factors that can prevent abnormal behavior from developing and develops therapeutic methods for the treatment of behavior disorders in non-human primates. She has a special interest in understanding individual, species, and sex differences in response to laboratory experiences and enrichment techniques. Research in the Environmental Enhancement (EE) Plan involves provision of toys, perches, food treats, social contact, and other enrichment to macaques and baboons. Beta-endorphin levels are measured to test the hypothesis that abnormal behavior might be maintained by the sensations produced by endogenous opioid release and could explain why such behaviors, one established, are difficult to treat.
