Dr. Kendell R. German

Dr. Germanís primary research program is designed to improve the neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infants. One objective focuses on neonatal iron research. Iron is critical for brain development and deficiency leads to irreversible developmental impairments. Current work is evaluating the effects of supplemental iron administration on markers of oxidative injury in the brain and strategies to improve neurodevelopmental outcomes in formerly preterm neonates. A second objective addresses a critical component of outcomes research, i.e., the ability to follow large cohorts of preterm infants prospectively. Toward that end, German is working with colleagues to develop a database to track all infants discharged from the UW and Seattle Childrenís Hospital NICUs. Additional research involves an IDDRC network Brain Gene Registry study and evaluating the effects of a reading intervention program.
