Dr. Guralnick's research centers on assessment of the social interactions and social integration of young children with developmental disabilities, and the design and evaluation of early intervention systems. In studies involving observational analysis of peer interactions in a variety of settings including controlled playgroups and community-based peer social networks, Guralnick has identified and characterized the unique peer interaction problems experienced by the vast majority of young children with developmental disabilities, including children with Down syndrome and others with mild (cognitive) delays. He also conducted the first comprehensive randomized clinical trial to enhance the peer-related social competence of young children with mild developmental delays. Current projects focus on the peer relationships of children with autism and the further development and application of the Developmental Systems Approach to early intervention.
