Dr. Guralnick's research centers on assessment of the social interactions and social integration of young children with developmental disabilities, and design and evaluation of early intervention systems. In studies involving observational analysis of peer interactions in a variety of settings including controlled playgroups and community-based peer social networks, Guralnick has identified and characterized the unique peer interaction problems experienced by the vast majority of young children with developmental disabilities, particularly children with mild (cognitive) developmental delays. Current projects focus on evaluation of interventions designed to promote peer-related social competence in children with developmental delays. These studies will also evaluate the extent to which family factors influence children's peer-related social competence and assess the relationship between family and child risk factors and social competence outcomes.
