Dr. Roxanne Hudson

Dr. Hudson engages in school-based research that takes place within the context it will eventually be used by educational staff. Currently, she is engaged in a project that examines the development of language and emergent literacy skills of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In this project, she examines the effectiveness of two interventions (Dialogic Reading and Phonological Awareness) in preschool children with ASD. In order to determine longer-term effects of the intervention on vocabulary and reading comprehension, children are then followed into kindergarten. This also allows for an examination of variables present in preschool that predict later reading success in this population, which will inform the types of skills and knowledge children with ASD need to develop before kindergarten. More generally, Hudson and her colleagues investigate reading interventions and development for a range of children with documented disabilities and those at risk for reading disabilities.
