Promoting Disabilities Education for Medical, Nursing and Dental Students
Core Function: Technical Assistance and Outreach Training
The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Improve the Health and Wellness of Persons with Disabilities identifies the health and wellness of persons with disabilities as a public health concern. A priority recommendation is that health care providers have the knowledge and tools to screen, diagnose and treat the person who has a disability as a whole person and with respect for their dignity. The UW Office of Disability has further identified improvement of the education of physicians, dentists and nurses as a critical priority. The Adults and Elders program is working in partnership with the Director of the Office of Disability and a national workgroup to develop strategies and materials to further this priority. The Adults and Elders Program is also working with the Medical, Dental and Nursing Schools at the University of Washington to advance opportunities for students to have experiences with adults with disabilities through CHDD programs. Through funding from the Washington State Legislature to the School of Medicine, a first year medical student will be conducting an Independent Investigative Inquiry with the Adults and Elders Program in Summer 2009.
