Core Function: Clinical Services

The Autism Clinical Services project provides state-of-the-art comprehensive and coordinated services to children from infancy through adolescence at risk for or with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and/or Asperger syndrome, and their families. Clincal services fall into five unique services areas that are each described in separate projects listed under the Autism Center program. The five clinical services projects are (1) Autism Behavorial Intervention, (2) Autism Diagnostic Services, (3) Autism Early Intervention Services, (4) Autism Social Skills Groups, (5) Autism Speech-Language/Occupational Therapy Services.

The following service areas comprise the overall Autism Clinical Services projects.

  • Behavioral Intervention involves working with the child, family and/or school staff to promote a child's ability to function successfully and adaptively at home, in the community, and/or at school.
  • Diagnostic Services use an interdisciplinary approach to diagnose infants, children, and adolescents who have or are suspected to have ASD. Disciplines include education, psychology, speech and language, occupational therapy, and pediatrics.
  • Early Intervention Services are provided by early childhood autism consultants (ECAC) who help develop home programs for children with ASD. The ECAC team uses a variety of empirically supported intervention techniques designed to promote children's communication, play, academic skills, imitation, motor skills, and social/emotional skills.
  • Social Skills Groups are used to teach children pivotal social skills, increase their sense of affiliation with others, and improve self-esteem. All groups are moderated by psychologists and include between 3 and 12 clients.
  • Speech–language and occupational therapy (OT) services support communication, sensory, and motor development of clients.
