Autism Early Intervention Services
Core Function: Clinical Services
The early intervention project is comprised of early childhood autism consultants (ECAC) that help develop home programs for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The ECAC team uses a variety of empirically supported intervention techniques designed to promote children's communication, play, academic skills, imitation, motor skills, and social/emotional skills.
Unlike many other developmental disabilities and disorders, ASD can be detected as early as 18 months of age. Once detected, early intervention can alleviate many long-term impacts of the disorder such as delays in congnitive, emotional and social development.
The ECAC team uses best practice strategies, based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Some of these approaches include structured teaching such as Discrete Trial, and Naturalistic Teaching Strategies such as incidental teaching and Pivotal Response Training (PRT). The ECAC team also uses visual supports to promote children's independent behavior. Individualized programs are developed for each child based on each child’s skills and needs, and input from the family.
The center collaborates with other service providers within and outside of the Autism Center. Services are typically provided for children from birth to early elementary school age,
