Disabilities Law Clinic
Core Function: Technical Assistance and Outreach Training
The Disability Law Clinic is under the UCEDD Community Disability Policy Initiative (CDPI) and is a collaborative project between the CHDD, the University of Washington School of Law and Columbia Legal Services. The purpose of the law clinic is to provide pre-service education for law students while offering legal assistance at a free or reduced rate to individuals with developmental disabilities.
The Disability Law Clinic accepts referrals from individuals who require assistive technology, have difficulty accessing health care and/or receiving appropriate special education services.
Students who serve at the clinic learn substantive law and are given opportunities to practice the multiple skills required to provide effective advocacy. This pre-service training opportunity will increase the number of attorneys in the community who are aware of the issues faced by individuals with disabilities.
Two groups of students have completed a nine-month internship at the clinic since it was started in 2003.
