Toddler Attachment Sort – 45 (TAS-45)
Contact: Jean Kelly, 206-543-8528
Core Function: Technical Assistance and Outreach Training
TAS-45 is a software program that has been designed to assess parent-child relationship and attachment characteristics. It is used for both the measurement of attachment behaviors for research projects and for guiding clinical work with families. TAS-45 poses a series of questions related to an observer’s (either researcher or clinician) observations. The observer selects statements that best reflect their observations of a parent and child during interaction. The results are scored using a multidimensional scaling technique which produces a security score and scores on several dimensions of attachment behavior. TAS-45 was derived from known research scales and field tested on a sample of 8,750 two year olds. It is intended for use by home visitors, social workers, nurses, early intervention staff, child care consultants, infant mental health consultants and researchers for children aged 18 to 36 months. After a 60-90 minute observation, scoring can be done in 10 minutes. Scores are graphed to create profiles representing parent and child relationship. Guidance on intervention and treatment is then provided to the user. TAS-45 was created as part of the NCAST-AVENUW program.
