Washington State Public Health Training Plan/Improving
Child-Family Health
Core Function: Information Development and Dissemination, Technical Assistance and Outreach Training
The goal of the Washington State Public Health Training Plan/Improving Child-Family Health project is to advance the health and nursing practices in Washington state through providing resources for education and training of public health professionals. Project activities include training, technical assistance, information development and dissemination.
The current focus of this project is to improve service delivery among First Steps programs to increase client-centered services, ensure a positive pregnancy, and improve newborn and adult competencies. First Steps is a program under the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services that helps lowincome pregnant women get the health and social services they need.
Faculty and staff members from the CHDD and University of Washington School of Nursing worked with the Washington State Department of Health to establish common goals for the advancement of health and nursing practice in Washington State and identified programs and resources to achieve these goals.
Recent accomplishments include developing a visually engaging, full-service website for public health nurses working in the field with diverse populations of low-income mothers and their first children; hosting a discussion board that allows site visitors to pose specific questions to expert faculty in the UW’s topranked nursing school; testing the effectiveness of a multigenerational family support system for pregnant women and their families involved in First Steps programs; and providing ongoing training and technical assistance of First Steps staff.
