CHILD Profile

Contact: Dahlia Kupfer, 206-543-1026

Core Function: Information Development and Dissemination

CHILD Profile has two components: (1) the health promotion system and (2) Immunization Registry for Washington State. The goal of the project is to increase preventive health care for children and thus increase the health of children in Washington State.

The health promotion component provides all parents statewide with age-appropriate immunization and well-child check-up reminders and concise parenting, health and safety information, including substantial early intervention information and resources. The immunization registry is an Internet-based system that allows enrolled health care providers to conveniently search for patients in the CHILD Profile statewide Immunization Registry and view and edit patient immunization records. Enrolled users are trained and sign a confidentiality agreement and only have access to their patient’s records.

UCEDD faculty support the efforts of the CHILD Profile project by providing formatted camera-ready materials, expertise in public health, coordination of all translation, website management, research and evaluation services (e.g., pilot of electronic dissemination of health promotion materials underway), and technical assistance to the Department of Health on various issues.

Currently, there are over 45 materials sent to parents for their children from birth to age 6. UCEDD faculty conducted a statewide parent satisfaction survey to ensure parents read and used the information they receive. The survey had a 47% response rate and yielded the following data.

  • 87% said they read the letters or saved them for later.
  • 68% said the letters helped answer parenting questions in the following areas: growth and development (40%), nutrition/eating habits (25%), general reminders and tips on what to do (20%), and information on immunizations (18%-29%).
  • 63% said the information helped them remember to get their child immunized on time.
  • 61% said the information helped them remember to take their child to a well-child visit.
  • 31% to 35% of respondents said they had changed their behavior because of the letters.

All materials are translated into Spanish, with a statewide Spanish review team for review coordinated via this office. Additionally, the CHILD Profile website was developed and updated, with a 40% increase in viewer traffic.
