Family Discipline Training Program

Contact: Kathy Watson

Core Function: Technical Assistance and Outreach Training

The expertise and perspective of family members is increasingly seen as an irreplaceable body of knowledge that is crucial to the optimal functioning of interdisciplinary teams serving those with developmental disabilities. Over the past decade, there has been increasing use of family members as part of the interdisciplinary team. In 2005, a working group of family members from across the Association of University Centers of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (AUCD) network adopted a set of competencies for Family Discipline Trainees. The development of these competencies symbolizes the commitment of AUCD to the idea that family members play a very important role on the interdisciplinary team. The CHDD LEND program has had family consultants for several years, but only recently have we been able to accept Family Discipline Trainees into our LEND program. Our first Family trainee started in Spring of 2008 and we have recently accepted our third Family trainee. In Fall of 2008 we were able to add a part-time Family Discipline Faculty position. The purpose of the Family Discipline Faculty is to participate in the interdisciplinary team and to be a mentor and supervisor to the Family Trainees.

Family Discipline Trainees offer a unique perspective which is valuable to interdisciplinary faculty, staff and other trainees. Our first cohort of Family Trainees is participating with LEND faculty in further development of the CHDD LEND Family Discipline Trainee program. As members of the team, they offer expertise on community based supports and services for families, promote the delivery of family-centered care, and raise the consciousness of providers about the experiences and needs of the families we serve. Family trainees participate in all aspects of the available LEND learning experiences as a means to broaden their knowledge of the service delivery system and the work of the other disciplines. In addition, they assist providers and other trainees to better understand and incorporate the family perspective.
