Evidence-Based Interventions for Severe Behavior Problems
Core Function: Research and Evaluation
This project is for an intervention at 18 schools using evidence-based practice (EBP) to improve the social and academic functioning of approximately 400 students. Schools will be randomly assigned to either the intervention or comparisons condition. Three school districts in WA have been recruited to participate. Those in the intervention will use a standardized screening process to identify and receive parental consent for 16-19 students in each school who have sever behavioral problems. In addition, 14 special education students with an emotional/behavioral disability per school district will participate. This will provide a sample of up to 386 students across all 18 schools. Students in the intervention will receive: 1) support from a school-based monitor who will encourage students to meet daily social and academic expectations, provide them brief problem-solving sessions regarding school problems, and meet with them to tally their points for the day completed by the classroom teachers. When students meet daily and weekly goals, the monitor will give them positive verbal and tangible reinforcement, and further praise and reinforcement from their parents. Students who are unresponsive to the Check In / Check Out system will receive a more intensive and individualized intervention using Functional Behavioral Assessment from a district level behavior specialist. A measurement model will be sued to assess the constructs of school engagement, academic success, social competence, and problem behavior using standardized measures.
