A Longitudinal Research Partnership to Investigate the impact of Early Head Start: 5th Grade Follow-Up Study

Contact: Joe Stowitschek

Core Function: Research and Evaluation

Over the past several years, the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project has studied a sample of 3,000 low-income children and families across the country who were randomly assigned to receive Early Head Start services or to a control group. The children and families have participated in several intense rounds of data collection. The last data collection was completed when the children were about to enter kindergarten. In August, 2006, Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. was awarded a contract to collect another round of data from the children, their families and teachers beginning in February of 2007. Most of the children will be fifth graders or completing their sixth year of school. The data will be used to estimate the effects of Early Head Start and to describe the elementary school experience of children who received Early Head Start services compared to other low-income children. Our project will collect the data on local families who are enrolled in the study.
