Preparation of Teachers for Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education

Contact: Susan Sandall, 206-221-3445

Core Function: Technical Assistance and Outreach Training

The purpose of this project is to increase the number of highly qualified teachers available to serve infants, toddlers and preschoolers with disabilities. This graduate program was designed in response to clear and persistent needs in the field for more and appropriately prepared teachers.

The project has three goals: 1) to increase the number of fully qualified teachers, especially those from underrepresented groups; 2) to put supports in place to ensure retention of these teachers in early intervention and early childhood special education programs; and 3) to prepare teachers who are confident and capable of meeting the needs of those young children who are most challenging to the early intervention/early childhood special education systems.

Over a two year period, the project will support 14 full time students (seven per year) in the second year of their masters program in Early Childhood Special Education. The project utilizes a strong recruitment effort as well as methods for strengthening the curriculum and field experiences. Graduates will have the knowledge and skill to use evidence-based practices in their work with children and families.
