Alaska Metabolic and PKU Clinic
Core Function: Clinical Services, Technical Assistance and Outreach Training
The purpose of the Alaska Metabolic and PKU Clinic is three-fold: 1) to provide consultation to patients and families regarding diagnosis and treatment of inherited metabolic disorders, most of which are identified by expanded newborn screening; 2) to provide technical assistance to the Alaska Maternal Child Health Program and the Alaska Newborn Screening Program; and 3) to provide continuing education for health care professionals relating to diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. These services aim to increase and improve clinical services for children with metabolic disorders in Alaska.
The metabolic clinics are held in partnership with Alaska Title V and MCHB programs in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and other locations. The clinics, which are organized locally and held at public health departments or hospitals, serve over 100 children each year. Local public health, school and private practice professionals participate in clinics and receive consultation regarding complex diagnostic and treatment issues of clients in their community.
Consultation clinics also provide in-service education, including walking rounds with local physicians and pediatric residents, clinical teaching for medical and nursing students and education sessions with families.
