Chemical Composition of Compounds

Close-up of Lab 2 setupThe two main objectives of this experiment are to identify compounds based on their percent metal composition and to identify the percent of a compound in a mixture.

In both parts I and II, a known mass of sample will be heated in a porcelin crucible using the flame from a Bunsen burner. The mass of the sample before heating, the mass of the cooled product, and information from the balanced chemical reaction will make it possible to determine the following:

Part IA: Based on the % magnesium in the product, does heating solid magnesium in air produce magnesium oxide (MgO) or magnesium nitride (Mg3N2)?

Part IB: Based on the % copper in the copper oxide product, was the sample Cu2CO3(OH)2 or Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2?

Part II: Based on the mass of oxygen lost while heating the sample, what is the % KClO3 in the KCl/KClO3 mixture?
