University of Washington Department of Chemistry Department of Chemistry

Computing

High speed Internet connections are widely available throughout the Department.  DHCP service is available on all of the department's five subnets, and permanent address assignments in the departmental domain (chem.washington.edu) are available upon request.  The department also provides email accounts in the departmental domain for faculty and staff.

The Department maintains two general purpose computer labs. A computer lab in the Chemistry Study Center provides 30 recent model MS Windows/Intel computers, with open access to all U.W. Students. The computer labs provide general purpose application software, as well as specialized math and chemistry software, including Mathematica, Matlab, Chemdraw, and Spartan.

The department also maintains a compute cluster for theoretical chemistry work, which was recently upgraded to a linux cluster of 211 dual processor 3.4 GHz Intel Xeon nodes equipped with a total of 754 Gigabytes of memory.  All nodes are interconnected with Gigabit Ethernet, and 32 of the nodes are also interconnected with Infiniband. There is a 1.2 Terabyte file server for common file storage.

In addition, several hundred personal computers and workstations are dispersed among the many research groups and teaching labs in the Department.
