Summary: A sealed bulb is warmed with body heat from hands. The increase in pressure in the bulb increases, demonstrated as a column of water is displaced.
Materials:
Charles Law apparatus
Large crystallizing dish
Warm water (or hands)
Procedure:
The gas inside the bulb can be expanded by using a warm water bath or simply by using your hands (vigorously rubbing your hands together will increase their heat). Make sure the system is closed before expanding the gas.
To schedule a demonstration, please send an email to the demonstration lab.
