Conductivity of Molten Salt

Materials:

Conductivity of molten salt apparatus

Bunsen burner, matches

Procedure:

Plug in conductivity apparatus and turn on.

Place burner under crucible.

Once the salt becomes molten, ions are free to move.  These ions can conduct electricity.  With the molten salt able to conduct electricity the circuit is complete so the light bulb will light up.  It takes ~10 min. to get the salt molten.

Low Melting Eutectic Mixture: 10 gm KNO3 + 8.5 gm NaNO2
