Heat of Solutions

Summary:  Calcium chloride (exothermic) and ammonium chloride (endothermic) are added to water.  The temperature change of the solution is measured and displayed using a large digital thermometer.  The demonstration can be done either qualitatively or quantitatively.  Other salts can be used in place of those listed.

Chemicals and Solutions:

Calcium chloride 10 g (record weight used)

Ammonium Chloride 10g (record weight used)

Materials:

Digital display and temperature probe

Two 250mL beakers,

Procedure:

Dissolve each salt in 100 mL water and show the temperature change
