Division Receives award for ACS Publications

The following are remarks from Division Past Chair, Dana Roth:

At the ACS Publications/CAS Sunday Evening Reception (during the recent SLA Annual Conference), the SLA Chemistry Division (along with other participating divisions) received an award "in Recognition of Outstanding Support". I'm sure I speak for all Chemistry Division members, both past and present, when I expressed my thanks for the award.

However, I couldn't help but feel that it was the ACS that deserved the award. Their Publications Division is one of the few organizations that truly lives up to their advertising slogan. High Quality - High Impact is almost an understatement, as a description of their products, and it also aptly applies to their staff members. In addition, CAS' SciFinder and SciFinder Scholar have completely transformed and greatly expanded the use and utility of Chemical Abstracts.

Both the ACS and Royal Society of Chemistry are to be greatly commended for their groundbreaking provision of electronic back files, which have made enormous contributions to the dissemination, and more importantly the use, of chemical information. I will be the first to admit that my initial skepticism about the increased cost of the ACS electronic journals was myopic in the extreme.
