Library
Communications: Old and New
Caltech's
chemistry library staff have been formally communicating with faculty and
graduate students for over 35 years. Two major products were instituted in
1965: a monthly New Books (NB) list and a bi-monthly Recently Published Books
(RPB) list. The NB list offered the option of requesting check-out and delivery
of recently acquired materials and the RPB list provided a formal mechanism for
library purchase requests (which are supplemented by informal requests).
With the
advent of electronic mail and the World Wide Web, communication opportunities
with faculty and students have greatly increased. In addition to e-mailing a
monthly New Book list to faculty members (derived from Caltech's OPAC), which
also includes information on the subject content of special journal issues,
library staff have also published a monthly newsletter since late 1998. The
Caltech Chemistry Library Newsletter announces new electronic products, offers
tips on searching various databases and includes items of general interest to
chemists.
Subject specialist librarians at
Caltech are also responsible for maintaining subject specific web pages, in
addition to contributing to the library's general reference web page and an
online journal database (OJDB).
NEW ‘CHEMISTRY’ BOOKS & SPECIAL JOURNAL ISSUES
March 2001
If
you would like to borrow any of these books or obtain a photocopy of the
contents of any of the special issues, please *** the items of interest and
return to Dana Roth (dzrlib@library.caltech.edu).
The
following list has been prepared for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty
members, from books & journals added in the Millikan and Fairchild
libraries during March 2001. The books are arranged in call number order (with
some special journal issues), within subject groups (i.e. science (general),
mathematics/computer science, physics, chemistry, molecular biology/medicine,
chemical engineering/materials science), followed by additional special journal
issues received in the Millikan and Fairchild Libraries.

1. LINUS PAULING
INSIGHT
In a recent letter to
Nature (Feb. 1, 2001, 409, 558), Jim Lake (UCLA) relates a 1988 conversation
with Linus Pauling in which
"(Pauling) suddenly asked my wife and me in his uniquely direct way
if we ever wondered why he hadn't solved the structure of DNA." Linus Pauling's explanation was that "I
guess that I always thought that the DNA structure was mine to solve, and
therefore I didn't pursue it aggressively enough".

3. CHEMICAL
ABSTRACTS PRINT SUBSCRIPTION
As part of the
original SciFinder Scholar license, Caltech agreed to maintain a subscription
to the print version of Chemical Abstracts thru 2001, which coincides with the
end of the 14th Collective period. As
announced at the CCE Faculty Meeting last March, Caltech will no longer
subscribe to the print version of Chemical Abstracts. In addition to SciFinder
Scholar, which is limited to academic use, Chemical Abstracts files are also
available through the STN Network for commercial pursuits.
Given the ease of use
of SciFinder Scholar, I also plan to move the 1967-2001 abstract volumes to the
Library's Annex. The index volumes for
1907-2001 will remain on MIL-8, along with the abstract volumes for 1907-1966.
4. GMELIN'S HANDBUCH
DER ANORGANISCHEN CHEMIE
GMELIN (the
inorganic analog of Beilstein) is now electronically available for Caltech
faculty and students thru Beilstein.
Login as you would
for Beilstein, except that on the initial Beilstein Commander screen there is a
'Database' pull down menu allowing you to choose either Beilstein or Gmelin.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL
when searching as the default database (when you first login) is the last one
used on that workstation.
The oldest
article indexed for Gmelin is by Joseph Priestley on Nitric Oxide, which
appeared in Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. in 1772.
The Priestley nitric oxide article is actually online! It's part of the 18th century volumes of
Philosophical Transactions mounted by the Bodlean Library. http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/cgibin/ilej/image1.pl?item=page&seq=1&size=1&id=pt.1772.x.x.62.x.147
5. SFX with Web of Science
The
Caltech Library System is the first U.S. academic library to roll out SFX with
Web of Science! SFX is a service which
allows users to view a list of services available for an article simply by
clicking an SFX link in the bibliographic citation in Web of Science. This
"menu" of resources may include the article's online full-text
version, among other resources. For
more information, see the SFX FAQ and SFX Executive
Summary or go to Web
of Science now to try it out!
