Congratulations to Zoha Syed, Jude Tunyi, Quynh Do, and Hyeon-Jin Kim who have been selected as Levinson Scholars/Washington Research Scholars!
Zoha Syed is part of the Goldberg research group in the Department of Chemistry. Zoha’s research focus is alkane functionalization using iridium catalysts. In her undergraduate career, Zoha has had the opportunity to conduct and present her research around the country. After she graduates, Zoha hopes to pursue a career in research.
- Jude Tunyi is part of the Pfaendtner Research Group in the Chemical Engineering Department. One of his projects focuses on increasing the stability of insulin using ionic liquid solutions with the goal of creating injectable insulin that lasts longer and acts faster in humans. Another project is the study of nanoparticles with drug molecules crossing the blood-brain barrier as a revolutionary method of drug delivery. After he graduates, Jude hopes to take a gap year to do more research at the NIH before going on to an MD/PhD program specializing in Neuroscience.
- Quynh Do is working in the Luscombe lab in the department of Materials Science and Engineering on new materials for organic solar cells. Her project focuses on solving the financial and environmental costs associated with the syntheses of π−conjugated polymers used as materials for organic solar cells through developing new coupling techniques.Her goal after getting her bachelor’s degree is to attend graduate school in a Ph.D program, potentially in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry.
- Hyeon-Jin Kim is a junior majoring in chemistry and biochemistry. In the spring quarter of his freshman year, he joined the Vaughan Group to help enhance super resolution techniques for bioimaging. His previous work involved developing methods that enable Expansion Microscopy with conventional antibodies and fluorescent proteins. Currently, he is collaborating with the Parrish Group from the Department of Biology to help them study dendrite-epidermis interactions in Drosophila.After graduation he plans to attend graduate school to study biological chemistry and to eventually pursue a career in academic research.
Each year the Department of Chemistry acknowledges our top students in the Honors General Chemistry series, the Honors Organic Chemistry series and the Physical Chemistry series.
The PC Cross Award for the top student in Physical Chemistry has been awarded to Kenji Nakamichi.
The Hyp Dauben Award for the top student in Honors Organic Chemistry has been awarded to Timothy Welsh.
The Freshman Achievement Award for the top student in Honors General Chemistry has been awarded to Ravishankar Madhu.

Congratulations to Mustufa Jafry who has won the President’s Medal for 2016! The President’s Medal is awarded to the student with the most distinguished UW record. Mustufa is a talented research and scholar who has received multiple scholarships and has several papers in line for publication. As a leader, he has served as co-chair of the UW Senior Gift Council, President and founder of UW Reach connecting pre-health students at the UW with medically underserved communities, and as president of UW Wellness Coalition, an organization working to reduce the stigma around mental illness and raise awareness about mental health issues among veterans and people affected by homelessness in Seattle.
After graduation, Mustufa plans to pursue a medical degree at the UW School of Medicine and either a Master’s in Public Health or a Master’s in Public Policy. His ambition is to become a physician in order to treat underserved populations.

Congratulations to Dylan Moore and Allison Rollins who have each been awarded a Bonderman Travel Fellowship! The fellowship allows them to embark on solo journeys that are at least eight months long and take them to at least two regions and six countries of the world.
Dylan will travel through the Caribbean Sea from Haiti to Trinidad as well as Venezuela, Brazil, Algeria, and Morocco!
Allison will travel to Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Israel, Chile, Peru, and Argentina!

Congratulations to Kelli Stoneburner who has won a $1000 Libraries Student Employee scholarship! As many as 12 scholarships per year are given to deserving student employees of the Libraries. The scholarships are funded through a variety of sources including individual donors, the Friends of the UW Libraries and the Allen Endowment.
Congratulations to Malte Lange who has won a Washington Research Fellowship. Malte works in Professor Xiaosong Li’s group where his research focuses on improving battery technology.
Congratulations to Amisha Parikh who has won a Washington Research Fellowship. Amisha works in Dr. Poolos Cellular Neurophysiology Lab at Harborview where she is studying epilepsy.

Congratulations to Jane Kwon, Cindy Wei, and Wenbi Wu who have been named Levinson Emerging Scholars!
Jane Kwon is a senior in the Department of Biochemistry. She joined Dr. Kaeberlein’s lab during her freshman year with an interest in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Starting as a yeast dissector, she helped to collect and quantify Replicative Lifespan Data of S. cerevisae. She then shifted her focus onto the role of mitochondrial health in aging using C. elegans, as a model system. She aspires to become a physician.
Cindy Wei is a senior majoring in Biochemistry (BS) and minoring in Global Health with Departmental Honors in Biochemistry. In her junior year she joined the Hoppins lab in the Department of Biochemistry, working on the molecular characterization of mitochondrial movement. Her current project focuses on the expression and purification of the proteins involved in microtubule directed mitochondrial transport: Trak1/2 and Miro1/2. Once these recombinant proteins have been obtained she will rebuild the transport machinery in vitro to investigate the function of each protein and their effects on each other in a simple system. Her undergraduate research experience has inspired her to continue to be involved in research and to go on to pursue a PhD after graduation in June 2015.
Wenbi Wu is a senior in Biochemistry (BS), Chemistry (BS) and Mathematics (minor) with Departmental Honors in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Starting from her freshman year, Wenbi began doing research in the lab of Professor David Ginger. Her research area is in hybrid polymer/quantum dot solar cells, with a current research focus on the morphology in hybrid polymer/quantum dot solar cell treated with different quantum dot surface ligands. In collaboration with the Moule group at UC Davis, she is trying to obtain a detailed three-dimensional tomography images. The goal is to better understand and control of morphology in these films to optimize the solar cell performance.
