Professor Maria Elena Garcia has been awarded the prestigious University of Washington's Distinguished Teaching Award. This class examines fiction and film, as well as selected poetry, popular songs, and essays, to explore diverse groups within contemporary Israeli society. Topics include the sabra ideal, holocaust survivors, Sephardic/Mizrahi communities, religious and secular Jews, Israel' s Arab minority, and questions of gender.
