Program Description
Greece is the birthplace of democracy and Western Civilization in general. It is located at the crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Politically stable and economically developed, Greece is the first country in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean region to have become a full member of the European Union, including participation in the Euro zone. As such, Greece plays a significant role in guiding her neighbors in their ambition to join the European Union.
Sunbathed, filled with antiquities, surrounded by blue waters, Greece is one of the most beautiful countries and destination of millions of tourists annually.
During the spring quarter of 2008, the Greek program will focus on the study of Greek language and culture, and Greece and Albania during the age of nationalism.
The program will take place at the University of Ioannina (UOI) in the city of Ioannina, which is located in the Northwest part of Greece. Ioanina, with a population of approximately 100,000, will provide the students with memorable opportunities to trace the long history of Greece. They will visit thousand year-old theatres and other Greek and Roman sites in the surrounding area, Byzantine churches, remnants of the Ottoman rule, and places where the Greeks of modern times made sacrifices in the defense of freedom. These weekly fieldtrips to major classical and Byzantine sites such as Athens, Delphi, Mycenae, Dodona, Meteora and major museums in those sites offer a sweeping historical perspective. At the same time students will experience life in contemporary Greece.
Students will lodge in dormitories at the University of Ioannina. The UOI will collect a refundable damage deposit from each student for security on the room. there will be a field trip to the Albanian border during the middle of the quarter and the program will end in Athens on the 2nd.
