Berlin is a dynamic and exciting metropolis. It is the fourth largest city in Europe with a diverse immigrant population, many different 'scenes' and contemporary cultures, and traces of history wherever you look. It is a city that has reinvented itself many times. The German Empire, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, the GDR and the 'Berlin Republic' all have left their footprints throughout the urban space. Students on the Berlin program will discover that the city's many faces are constantly changing. And yet the city is easy to navigate. It invites you to become a temporary 'Berliner'. A partnership between the University of Washington and the Humboldt University allows our students to use Humboldt’s libraries and computer facilities, dormitories and regional transportation pass.
Program Description
In fall quarter 2009, the CHID program in Berlin will explore the Berlin Republic twenty years after the fall of the wall. Has Berlin become a unified city? How can we read the social, cultural, and architectural markers of a divided past, and how do they extend into the future? What did political unification mean for the citizens of Berlin, and how have economic and social changes impacted post-Cold War German identities? We will address these questions by way of urban explorations, meetings with public officials, social activists, artists, and journalists as well as through a wide variety of thematic texts and other media. Being in Berlin during the celebrations for the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the wall will provide the backdrop for our exploration. No experience necessary in the Social Sciences or the German language. Students from all areas of study are strongly encouraged to apply.
This program is open to students from all backgrounds. All students are encouraged to apply.
Curriculum
The study abroad is sponsored by the Comparative History of Ideas and the European Studies Program at the Jackson School of International Studies. It will consist of three courses (5 credits each)
EURO 494/CHID 471a: Politics, Society, and Culture from Bonn to Berlin
EURO 499/CHID 498 Independent Projects: Urban Cultures & Social Change in East & West Berlin
CHID 471b Memorializing the Past and Present in Berlin.
Courses include a weekly discussion seminar; on-site visits and guided tours as well as guest lectures. An optional four-week intensive language course will be offered in Berlin before the fall program begins (this option requires an additional fee). Students will be required to attend a 2-credit, non-graded orientation seminar in spring 2009.
Cost
The program fee is still being finalized and will be around $4,750. This fee will cover program costs, housing, and transportation and overnight accommodations for field trips. Upon acceptance, participants are required to submit a signed payment contract to the CHID office within two weeks. At this time, the non-refundable $350 deposit will be assessed to the student’s tuition account. In addition and at the same time, students must pay the IPE fee of $250 to the Office of International Programs and Exchanges. The program fee does not cover: IPE fee, airfare, most food, health insurance or personal travel and expenses.
The CHID Program reserves the right to change the program fee based upon dollar devaluation or unforeseen economic conditions. If such a change occurs, students will be notified of the increase and an adjustment will be made to the final program payment. All fees are charged to students’ accounts, and paid the same way as tuition.
Refund: The $350 deposit is non-refundable. Any student withdrawing from the program before July 10, 2009 will not be responsible for any payments beyond the $350 deposit and the IPE fee. Any student withdrawing from the program after this deadline will be liable for any non-recoverable payments already made or committed on behalf of the participant, which could range from $600 to the entire program fee. Participants who wish to withdraw must submit a signed Withdrawal Form to both the CHID and IPE offices.
