I wrote two poems during my time in the Arctic Circle. \u201cCompulsive Sharing\u201d\u00a0was inspired by Dian Million&#8217;s writings on indigenous knowledge, as well as my dislike for photographing things while I travel. \u201cFour Arctic Brothers\u201d was inspired by the indigenous music festival Riddu Ri\u00f0\u00f0u and some S\u00e1mi poetry.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h4>Compulsive Sharing<\/h4>\n<p>I don&#8217;t like to photograph every step I take and every face I meet, every hill and lake touched by the sun. I like my mind to spin and my eyes touch the colors and shades of reality.<\/p>\n<p>The forests own my heart. My husband is the moon. I like to be outside when the clouds break and drag their teeth across the sky. I lift my chin, open my mouth, and lick.<\/p>\n<p>The conquests have taken from people with the dreaming rights to their land, and since I am not indigenous, I am an orphan&#8217;s child, a pastiche with lipstick, a witch with brittle, thirsty skin and no clan to hear my song, but for the ashes of my grandparents perched in the passenger seat of a company truck, I dream in a vacuum.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Four Arctic Brothers<\/h4>\n<p>Four arctic brothers<br \/>\nOne has no legs<br \/>\nHe sits in a garbage bag<br \/>\nIron eyes point across the lake<br \/>\nSilently counting his stubs<br \/>\nHurting memories of branches, horns, and hoof<\/p>\n<p>Four arctic brothers<br \/>\nDotting the shoreline<br \/>\nLittle cans all in a row<br \/>\nPotato peel skin furrowed, black and sprouting<br \/>\nHe has nine eyes and watches everyone<br \/>\nwith a frost smoke blanket<\/p>\n<p>Four arctic brothers<br \/>\nThree lips release<br \/>\nApples spill out<br \/>\nLike newspapers at Simone best&#8217;s feet<br \/>\nThey gather and stir<br \/>\napples crinkle and crumble<br \/>\nThey shrivel and decay<\/p>\n<p>Four arctic brothers<br \/>\nOne speaks colors<br \/>\nSummons safety plastic<br \/>\nStorm swirls and cuts<br \/>\nStill they wait and he fingers his gun<br \/>\nThinks of his husband<br \/>\nAnd touches each of their shoulders before the end<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Summer of 2016, I got to travel to Troms\u00f8, Norway and learn about\u00a0S\u00e1mi language and culture and global indigeneity from Professors Christopher Teuton (Cherokee Nation) and Troy Storfjell (S\u00e1mi).
