Thank
you for your interest in our program! The University of Washington Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program is fully accredited as a 2-year program,
for residents entering after completion of at least their PGY-3 year. We provide
a dynamic training experience designed to capture the rapidly expanding clinical
and research expertise in the field.
Excellent clinical training is provided in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, consultation-liaison, and community-based settings, with didactic sessions, conferences, and supervision designed for the resident's level of training. There is an emphasis on the care of severely disturbed children in the public sector.
We teach a balanced approach to care integrating careful use of psychopharmacology along with psychotherapeutic and supportive measures which have efficacy supported by research. Residents are expected to develop an integrated array of knowledge and skills regarding the diagnosis and treatment of complex psychiatric illnesses in youth, as well as to display a strong sense of responsibility for patient care and a commitment to socially and financially responsible clinical practice.
This web site is intended to give you a brief overview of the program, including the clinical sites, curriculum, special opportunities, the resident group, and living in the Northwest. If you have further questions, please feel free to call or email me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome
to the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences!
We are pleased that you are interested in our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Program. Our goal is to provide our residents with excellent and balanced training,
preparing them for leadership roles in academic, community, and clinical settings.
Our Department offers a rich and stimulating training environment. Residents learn the skills of clinical Child and Adolescent Psychiatry through rotations at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Child Study and Treatment Center and additional rotations at other public facilities, complemented by a comprehensive two-year didactic program.
Each of the clinical training sites offers a unique patient population and distinct clinical opportunities. Clinical supervision and didactic instruction is provided by our teaching faculty, which includes internationally known investigators with a wide range of clinical and research interests. We seek to foster both in our faculty and our trainees, a commitment to lifelong learning, compassionate patient care, and a strong sense of professional responsibility and integrity.
While providing residents with excellent broad-based clinical training, we also wish to help them explore their own interests within Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Our Department is committed to the care of the disadvantaged and underserved. We offer a wealth of elective opportunities in the public sector, working with diverse cultural groups. We feel that psychiatrists are and will be increasingly called upon to work at the interface of psychiatry and the rest of medicine, consulting in primary care settings.
I hope that you will visit us and that we will have the opportunity to introduce you to our residents, faculty, and the training program.
