Eating & Endocrine Disorders – Rat models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease induced by vitamin D deficiency and westernized diet

To further explore mechanisms mediating these effects of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) on insulin resistance (IR) and NAFLD among overweight children, the Roth lab has developed a rat model of NAFLD induced by vitamin D deficiency and a westernized diet (high fat and high sugar intake). This model results in histologic features of NASH and is associated with up-regulation of hepatic inflammatory and oxidative stress genes as well as toll-like receptor/endotoxin signaling pathway. This work is being done in conjunction with Dr. Kris Kowdley at the Benaroya Research Institute.
